Prof. Changyuan YU is currently a Chair Professor of Photonic Information System at Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Founding Director of PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute. He obtained his B.Sc. and B. Economics from Tsinghua University, M.Sc. from University of Miami, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from University of Southern California in 2005. He joined the faculty of National University of Singapore in 2005, where he served as the Founding Leader of Photonic System Research Group at Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a joint Senior Scientist with A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research till 2015 when he joined PolyU. And he was a visiting professor with Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Melbourne in 2007. His research focuses on photonic devices, optical fiber communication and sensing systems, and biomedical instruments. He has been the PI/co-PI/co-I of 70+ research projects, and supervised 20+ postdocs and 40+ PhD students. He served in Telecommunications Standards Advisory Committee for Singapore government. His team has set up a few spin-off companies and won 16 best paper awards in conferences, the 1st Prize of Technological Invention Award in Guangdong Province in 2020, and the National Championship (biomedical area) in the 3rd China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in 2014. He is an Optica Fellow.
Photonic technologies play a key role in the field of advanced manufacturing in modern information age. Prof. Yu and his team pioneered the research and commercialization of photonic information technologies and made several breakthroughs in optical communication/sensing/imaging devices and systems, including carrier recovery and signal compensation in optical fiber communication systems, optical performance monitoring in optical networks, AI-assisted signal processing for optical sensing systems, and novel meta-devices and chips, which promoted the revolution of photonic manufacturing technologies.
