Dr Tat Ming Chan, Danny, has been serving in the Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, at the Prince of Wales Hospital since 1999. He is currently a consultant, the Division head and the Cluster Service Team head of Neurosurgery of the New Territories East Cluster. He is also the co-Director of Otto Wong Brain Tumour Centre and an honorary Clinical Associate Professor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Dr Chan graduated from the faculty of Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, in 1995. After the basic general surgical training in the Prince of Wales Hospital, he joined the neurosurgical residency program in the same institute under the mentorship of Prof. Wai Poon in 1999.
During his training, he was honored with Ethicon medal in Fellowship examination of Surgery in 1999 and with Douglas Miller prize in the Joint Specialty Fellowship Examination of Neurosurgery organized by the Royal college of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong in 2004.
He completed training in glioma surgery (awake functional cortical mapping) with Prof. Mitchel Berger (UCSF) in 2002 and in neuro-oncology with Prof. Alfred WK Yung (MDACC) in 2007.
His areas of interest include glioma surgery, neuro-oncology and functional neurosurgery (stereotactic neurosurgery & deep brain stimulation). Dr Chan’s multi-disciplinary work in neuro-oncology and functional neurosurgery has been recognized in the local and international communities with the establishment of the CUHK Otto Wong Brain tumour centre, the combined neuro-oncology clinic, the annual Brain conference, the Mr.Otto Lien Da Wong visiting professorship in neuro-oncology, the combined movement disorder clinic and the Deep Brain Stimulation program. His collaboration has extended to medical bio-engineering in recent years. He is collaborating with the medical bio-engineers of various institutes of Hong Kong (HKU, CUHK, HKUST, CAIR) in the area of stereotactic neuro-robot, novel cellular imaging technique and AI precision therapeutics. His team (HKU engineering + CUHK Neurosurgery) was awarded both the best paper award in Medical Robotics and the best Conference paper award on “Compact design of a hydraulic driving robot for intra-operative MRI-guided bilateral stereotactic neurosurgery” in the IEEE international conference on Robotics and Automation-ICRA 2018 (Brisbane, Australia). A Bronze medal was awarded to the CUHK engineering & neurosurgery team for the project of “A semi-autonomous Stereotactic Brain Biopsy Robotic system with enhanced safety” in 2022 Special edition of the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions.
