Professor Boey is an accomplished leader in higher education and an outstanding scholar. He was previously Deputy President (Innovation & Enterprise) at the National University of Singapore, and Provost and Chair of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Nanyang Technological University.
Professor Boey has a strong focus on world-class education, research and innovation. He has substantial experience in higher education management at a senior level.
His key research contributions have been in the use of functional biomaterials for medical devices. An accomplished inventor, Professor Boey has founded several successful spin-off companies to commercialize his cardiovascular, ocular and surgical implants. His customizable hernia mesh received USA FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval while his recent COVID Swab design received the CE Mark approval.
Professor Boey received Singapore’s highest scientific award for his lifetime achievement, the President’s Science & Technology Medal, in 2013. He was also awarded the prestigious Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine Fellow award in the same year for his biomedical research achievements. His research team won the 2014 Singapore President’s Technology Award. As Provost at the Nanyang Technological University, he built Singapore’s second Undergraduate Medical School, partnering with Imperial College London, for which he received the 2016 Singapore National Day Public Administration Gold Medal.
